Kate, Leopold, and the PUNK rooftopWhile we take a sabbatical from putting out the next issue (PUNK #1) due to circumstances beyond our control, we decided to go to the movies. The lame romantic comedy Kate & Leopold had one reason we decided to see it - a pivotal scene was shot right next to the PUNK magazine office. Anyone who has seen the trailer has noticed the romantic rooftop dinner, where waiters serve fine wine and the two lovebirds fall in you-know-what. This was shot right outside the PUNK Penthouse window. The shot of Meg Ryan walking down the roof and emerging into the fantasyland dinner scene? That's the corner of the PUNK office. While Kate & Leopold dance the waltz you can even catch a glimpse inside the office window - and the crummy walls outside the office, peeling paint and all.

The movie was filmed before September 11 (the PUNK penthouse is two blocks away from Ground Zero), but the filmmakers were interested in the location because of its proximity to a different New York landmark: The movie's silly plot involves a time warp accessible only by jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge. (For out-of-towners: Ground Zero is very close to the Brooklyn Bridge, which can also be seen from the PUNK rooftop.) The movie doesn't make much sense, it's not very funny, and it's typical of the problems plaguing today's movies. It's just another uninspired, unoriginal formula date movie/chick flick. All in all though, the PUNK magazine rooftop does a great job of looking romantic and exciting. This was mostly because the set dressers added fake skylights and the other nice decorations added to make our crummy, old rooftop look like the most romantic place to eat in New York City. And amazingly it works! It's one of the reasons so many people have been asking if they can attend a PUNK Listening Party... (They've been suspended for a few months until the next issue can be put together, but we have a few left over from 2001 we'll be posting here in the future.)
